A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
