British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
