The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
