As any significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
